Would You Work There?
When I was a kid I begged for a job at the local skateboard shop. It definitely had nothing to do with pay, PTO or remote work. No task was too big or small from cleaning the restroom to stocking shelves. I did it all with the pride of knowing that “I made it” to the other side of the counter. Better yet, my friends knew it.
I imagine that the early employees of Apple or (place cool tech company here) have had similar feelings of excitement and pride.
I so often hear from business owners that they are having a hard time attracting and retaining bright young talent. We can’t all be Apple or the cool local skate shop, but we can and should always seek to make our team feel like there is no better place in the world to be then at this party (a.k.a. place of your employment).
Litmus test: Would your 16 year old self beg to work at your company?
